While this device WOn't give you miles of warning as the top of the line models do, it will provide some protection and costs about 10% of the cost of the versions.
The XTR-140 has a windshield mount, a power cord, and an instructions manual. The windshield mount is really pretty nice as well as the suction cups stick to the window better than some of the higher priced radar detectors we have tested. The power cord is a pretty low quality straight (not coiled) cord, but is long enough and it gets the job done. It gets the job done, although we undoubtedly wouldn't characterize this unit as good looking.
There are just 3 user selectable features on this particular unit. It's 3 city modes, a highway mode, a quiet style, and a VG-2 on/off mode. The XTR 140 is unable to recall any configurations, so each single time you change it it on, you'll need to modify your options back. Luckily the default settings are what we recommend using as we drive, and no settings are usually changed by us.
On the street, we got K band detection range using the Whistler XTR and excellent X -140, but we discovered the Ka-band variety to be significantly lacking. While we nevertheless were able to slow down in time, we'd some Ka band encounters that were too close for comfort.
We discovered the alarm tones with this unit pretty inferior. We weren't able to tell the difference between the bands based on sound and we needed to look at the the system each time it alarmed. While this may not sound like a big deal, if we-don't have to we don't like to consider our eyes off the road.
